Corn and Gluten Free list 1/30/07

Gluten free/Corn free list
**Please note I am still researching some products. I have revamped the list to make it easier to use, at least in my opinion. I am still researching supplements and medications, so they appear empty at this time.

Whole Foods - Stoned Wheat Crackers

Due to a reaction posted on Delphi and that the item has not had company confirmation in ages, we are removing this from the list until its reconfirmed or proved safe.

If you have any information reguarding the corn-free status of this product, please let us know. Thanks.

Bell & Evans - Chicken

A recent post of a letter from Bell & Evans confirms corn-free status of their chickens.

According to the company, their chicken meat is not treated with any chemicals, corn derived or otherwise.

Vitamin Research Products

A newcomer to the Delphi Forums has investigated and is currently trying a couple products (Digestive Enzymes & Triphala) by Vitamin Research Products.

I briefly looked at Vitamin Research Products' website and noticed that some of their products state that they're corn-free.

This company looks promising. Do make sure to read labels.

This company will be showing up on next month's list, provided no allergic reactions are reported.

Corn-Free Foods & Products List - 1-12-2007

This posting contains an outdated list. Please Go to Corn-Free Foods & Products List mainsite and look on the sidebar for an updated list. Thanks

*********

FruitaBu by Stretch Island

A company response from Stretch Island as posted on Delphi Forums, confirms their FruitaBu products to be corn-free.

According to the company, any citric acid or pectin in their products is naturally derived from the fruit.

Let us know if you have any problems with this product.

Humbolt Ice Creams - Corn-free

In an initial inquiry into Humbolt Ice Creams, Humbolt Creamery claimed that their Kirkland Signature Vanilla Ice Cream (Costco) and their Humbolt Organic Ice Cream pints were corn-free.

However, after further questioning, Humbolt Creamery investigated deeper and found that their vanilla was derived using corn.

Kirkland Signature Vanilla has had reported reactions due to the vanilla, and we expect the same for Humbolt's Organic Ice Creams containing vanilla.

However, the Humbolt Organic Ice Cream pints in Butter Pecan, Mint Chip, and Chocolate should be safe.

Kenra - Intense Emollient Treatment

A post listing the ingredients and relating a conversation with Kenra personnel states that thier Intensive Emollient Treatment is corn-free.

The head chemist for the company, Paul Brown recommended patch testing on the forearm to be sure of no reaction before using.

Please let us know if you have any problems with this product.

Boss Lady Lipbalm

According to a company reponse posted on Delphi Forums, the Vitamin E used in Boss Lady lipbalm does probably contain corn derivatives. The company could not confirm the product to be corn-free.

The Vitamin E comes from BASF which produces almost exclusively vitamins in a corn-based carrier.

List of Corn-Based Products

The Kentucky Corn Grower's Association has provided a list of corn-based products for us to avoid.

Notables on the list are:
BioBags
Duracell Procell Batteries
Eveready Batteries
Febreze Deoderizing Spray (this is a very problematic item, even their allergy-free)
Gyne-Lotrimin
Ingeo Fiber products (bedding) this includes pillows sold at Target.
Ingeo Carpet
Kingsford Charcoal
Magic Nuudles (Craft material)
Natural Living Bedding (Target, Linens n Things, and Amazon.com)
Palmer Tempera Paints
Prang Art Paints
Tinactin Foot Powder
Sheetrock Wallboard

Superstore Brand Cranberry Juice - Canada

For our Canadian friends, it has been reported that Superstore's brand 100% Pure Cranberry Juice in the glass bottle is corn-free.

Rudi's Organic Bakery

Rudi's products do contain corn. A post on Delphi lists the ingredients of Rudi's Country Morning White Bread. The natural enzymes do contain a small amount of corn.

Rudi's Wheat Bread is testimonied to have more corn in it.

Their ascorbic acid is not derived from corn, however another corn derivative is used to stabilize the ascorbic acid in the bread.

Annie's Naturals - Salad Dressings

A persistant inquirer into Annie's Naturals Salad Dressings found out that the xanthan gum used in their products is grown on corn.

Annie's items with xanthan gum will not be showing up on the list for this reason.

VaniCream

Vanicream has been successfully used by some mothers on their corn-allergic babies. However, a response from the company makes it clear that they are unable to confirm corn-free status.

There are several potentially corn-derived ingredients in the product and the company remains "very doubtful that corn was, in fact, an intial raw material."

The company response was a very nicely worded "I don't know" response and recommended testing the product on a small amount of skin first. They also offered me samples in which to try this.

This product should be used with extreme caution and as the company recommends, test a small area first. (If you're that brave)

Norbest Turkeys

A post from November 2006, relays the results of an inquiry into Norbest turkeys.

Norbest is supposed to have no corn in their products, however I believe this may be regional. The inquiry was made into Norbest in Utah. While I was in Nebraska, I saw Norbest turkeys with several additives and injected flavorings specially marked "grown in Nebraska". I did try a Norbest Natural turkey (no labeled additives) in Nebraska and reacted.

So do use caution with this product.

Jenni-O Whole Turkeys

A post On Delphi from November 2006, relays the results of an inquiry into Jenni-O turkeys.

According to the post, Jenni-O swears their turkeys are corn-free.

No reported reactions to date.

Boar's Head Meats & Cheeses

In November 2006, Boar's Head confirmed that two of their deli lunch meats are corn-free.

Boar's Head Low Sodium Turkey
Boar's Head Deluxe Low Sodium Roast Beef

Since there is a lot of cross-contamination at the deli counter, these meats may not be corn-free when you get them. Do be careful.

Also back in Septemer 2006, Boar's Head confirmed that their White American Deli Cheese was corn-free as well. (Same cross-contamination risks at the Deli pertain to this as well)

If you have any other information on the corn-free status of these products or reactions to report, please let us know.

Kirkman Labs

Kirkman Labs is on the corn-free list and has been successfully used by several. However there have been reported reactions by severely sensitive persons. So use caution.

A statement from Kirkman Labs as posted on Delphi gives a few more details about their corn-free stance.

"Our vitamin D 3 is synthetically extracted from sheep lanolin by the use of solvents such as alcohol or acetone."

These solvents can be corn and most likely are corn-derived. The company goes on to say that all Vitamin D is made this way and theirs is the same as everyone elses. (So thus must be safe? Right?)

Kirkman Labs will stay on our list so far as the reactions have been very few, in light of the number of successes. If you do have any issues with their products, do let us know.

Lundberg Farms - Rice Cakes

A member of Delphi forums: Avoiding corn posted that she has verified with the company back in September 2006, that only their Organic Salt-Free Brown Rice Cakes dated after 6006 (June 2006) are corn-free.

It seems their other rice cakes do contain a small amount of corn.

If you have additional information about Lundberg Rice cakes corn-free status, please let us know. Thanks.

Trader Joe's Chocolate

This cross-contamination problem may or maynot be pertinent to corn allergies. Since many of us also have other allergy concerns, I thought I'd post this concern.

It has been reported on Delphi that Trader Joe's chocolate bars have a high incidence of cross-contamination with nuts and soy.

According to the post, pieces of nuts have been found several times in their chocolate bars. So anyone with a nut allergy should definately avoid them.

King Arthur - Sourdough Starter

King Arthur, known for their exceptional flours, also makes a sourdough starter.

Their Classic New England Sourdough Starter is made using their flour and comes with complete instructions and a recipe.

A post on Delphi, containing a correspondence from King Arthur, shows how helpful they are to their customers.

While suggesting their own product (as any company would do) they also went out of their way to give other sites for making your own sourdough starters, even a potato based sourdough starter.

The King Arthur Sourdough Starter will show up on the next posting of the list. Please let us know if you have any problems with this product.

King Arthur Flours

One of the reasons we love King Arthur products is their honesty. It is rare that we encounter a company that is honest to fault.

In a letter posted on Delphi, King Arthur confirms their products to be as free of corn as humanly possible in our current grain storage practices.

Unknown to many people, all grains are interchangeably stored in silos across the country before being shipped off to be processed and made into foods and products.

King Arthur admits to this process happening and thus cannot 100% guarantee that their flours do not contain any corn. As they state in their letter, "Please advise we can not guarantee our flours are free from all corn traces. During the milling process, there is almost always corn in the unclean wheat as it heads to cleaning house in the mill. Virtually all of the corn is removed but it is possible that a piece of corn the size and shape of wheat slips through and is ground into flour."

King Arthur flour (to my knowledge) is the safest wheat flour in market, and this admission by King Arthur is something that happens all across the world with every wheat flour product.

As always, if you have any problems with this product or have additional information on its corn-free status please contact us.

Florida's Natural OJ

According to testimony on Delphi forums, Florida's Natural states that their Orange Juice is completely corn-free.

This has been tested and no corn-related reactions have been reported. As always, let us know if you've any information to the contrary.

Sunday, January 07, 2007

Modern Organic Products - MOP - Pear Shampoo

According to a post on Delphi, Modern Organic Products has confirmed that there is no corn or corn derivatives in their Pear Shampoo.

During the inquiry, the company verified each ingredient as not being corn-derived.

It's good to add new things to the list. As always, if you have any corn reactions to this product, please let us know.

Friday, January 05, 2007

Benedetta Clearing Spray - Hand Sanitizer

A post on Delphi about Benedetta Clearing Spray indirectly provides company confirmation that this product is corn-free. It has not been tested yet though.

Benedetta's website does look promising. Unfortunately, they are not entirely accurate on the sources of Isopropyl Alcohol and Propylene Glycol as they claim the source to be petroleum (not the normal corn derivatives that they are now). However, their adamant dislike for these ingredients is promising.

StoneyField Farms - Yogurts

Before this blog, we used to have StoneyField Farms yogurts on the list. At the time, Stoneyfield Farms insisted that their yogurts were corn-free and it took persistance to get answers.

In November, we posted StoneyField Farms yogurts as unsafe with the following reasons: "vanilla does have corn alcohol, unsure on pectin. Company insists its corn-free"

In a recent post on Delphi about StoneyField Farms O'Soy yogurt, it appears the StoneyField Farms is changing their tune and being more upfront about the use of corn in their products.

In the inquiry about O'Soy yogurt, the company clearly states the use of corn alcohols in their natural flavorings, and admits to "minute amounts of corn derivatives in our products".

For those of us who have had to deal with Stoneyfield Farms in the past, with false claims of corn-free status, this is definately a step in the right direction for Stoneyfield Farms, and shows that they really do listen to their customers.

Thursday, January 04, 2007

SunMaid Raisins

In our post Not Corn-free Research prior to 11/13/2006, we listed SunMaid raisins as being problematic and that we had removed it from our list.

The small boxes of SunMaid raisins (6 small boxes package) seem to still be ok, but all other packaged SunMaid raisins seem to be problematic. The source of this problem is not verified with the company (Company denial) and is thus unknown.

The Delphi thread: Safe Raisins? talks about this a little further.

A company reponse posted on Delphi Forums states that there is no corn in their raisins. However, these will not be added back to the list until human testing clears them.

Wellshire Farms - Unsafe

I had posted a notice about Wellshire Farms on our sister blog News For Corn Avoiders back in September and it just came to my attention that such information is also needed on this blog as well.

Wellshire Farms is known among the Corn Avoider community to be problematic for those avoiding corn. Their very nice search engine on their site that allows you to search for their products according to your allergy concerns, must be applauded for its ingenuity and the appearance that the company is concerned for its customer's health. However, the search engine is not accurate for selecting corn-free foods.

As posted back in September, the company uses undeclared cornstarch in their packaging process, which also does not show up on the search engine. Also their lactic acid starter is corn-based which their search engine doesn't catch.

Please use extreme caution when trying Wellshire Farms products, or better yet, just avoid them.

Late July - Classic Rich Crackers

A company response declares these crackers to be completely corn-free.

Late July specifically states that the enzyme used is derived with wheat ingredients, and that they don't use corn starch on their equipment (processing aid).

These will be appearing on the next edition of the list.

Tuesday, January 02, 2007

Virgil's Rootbeer

A few days ago, a member of Delphi forums noticed that Virgil's was now listing citric acid on the label.

An inquiry into the source of the citric acid, recieved this reply from the company stating that the citric acid has always been there, and is derived from corn. The company just now decided to list it.

Since I used to drink this soda up until 6 months ago, I have a real hard time believing that it was always in there. Nevertheless, the soda has been removed from the list.

Virgil's Creme Soda is being investigated as well. Stay Tuned.

Advil - Infants Drops

Back in August (before this blog started), Infants' Advil Drops were added to the list.

Here is a copy of the correspondence recently posted as a followup to questions about the product.

Aleve

According to a report on Delphi, Bayer has confirmed their Aleve caplets and tablets to be free of corn and corn derivatives.

There are several questionable ingredients in the product, and further inquiry into the sources of these ingredients has been partially revealed.

The hypromellose and microcrystalline cellulose are both from wood sources. Povidone is from rubber/vinyl, and probably not corn-based.

The person investigating had a possible reaction to the product as well.

A reaction to Aleve has been posted as well as Aleve's lack of cooperation in locating the problem. She called them to get the sources of their ingredients. Their reply was to state that there was no corn starch or corn derivatives in the product, and to brag about naproxen's effectiveness as a pain reliever. They're also sending her coupons (for a product she can't have because she's allergic).

Please use caution with this product. If you do have any other information on the corn-free status of this product, do let us know. Thanks.
