Organic Valley Deli Cheeses

Just in.. Organic Valley Deli cheeses are now packed using tapioca/sago starch instead of corn starch. This was reported by company correspondence posted on Delphi Forums - Avoiding Corn.

Per Organic Valley: "We have completely converted to the the tapioca/sago starch dusting."

Do be careful though as there may still be a few corn starched packages left out there, and these may not fully hit the shelves for several months.

You'll also need to make sure to keep reading the labels for any other corny additives. This is just a packaging update.

Also - None of the Stringles or Sticks use corn starch. :)

2012 Update: Block cheeses are not safe.

"their 8oz package is dusted in corn starch and their is a possibility of peanut cross contamination as it is packaged in a facility that processes peanuts! ...  the larger 16oz blocks and was told there is a risk with them as well due to the facility using corn starch on the outsides of the packaging"

Tillamook Cheese Update

Tillamook cheese has been on our list for a while. Some people have reported reactions, but lately more so.

One of the Delphi - Avoiding Corn members inquired again into Tillamook and discovered that all their cheeses are unsafe, or at least unreliably safe.

"
All our cheeses are aged in 40# blocks; the packages our 40# blocks are aged in are dusted with corn starch"

This means that the outside portion of the blocks would contain more corn starch than the inside, so when its cut certain blocks may have more corn than others. Eating Tillamook with a corn allergy is a roulette of sorts.

Another poster clarified the corn starch dusting and it may be less contamination risk that originally thought, but do make sure to use caution or.. avoid it.

Organic Valley - Cheese

We'd posted about Organic Valley's unsafe cheeses on our sister site and in the beginning of starting this blog, but its been so long that I think a reminder/update is necessary.

According to a post on Delphi- Avoiding Corn, in April of 2007 Organic Valley reported that they use corn starch in packaging their cheeses.

Another poster claims Organic Valley does not use this process on their Sharp and Regular Chedder BLOCK cheese (not raw cheddar), but this hasn't been human tested to confirm.

So do use extreme caution with Organic Valley cheeses.. or just avoid them (which is the safer bet).

4C - Parmesan Cheese

A company response posted on Delphi - Avoiding Corn states that there is no corn or corn derivatives in 4C's Parmesan cheese.

However, the company could not confirm if the salt was iodized or not. Since iodized salt uses corn to get the iodine to stick to the salt, this item may contain corn if iodized salt is used.

KerryGold Dairy Products

Correspondence from KerryGold posted on Delphi Forums, gives much reassurance that their products are completely corn-free.

KerryGold dairy products are imported from Ireland and use grass-fed cows. They are entirely hormone and preservative-free.

The company's correspondence goes into much detail about how careful they are in making sure only the best and purest milks are used in their products.

Their cheese products have been successfully trialed by several on the Delphi Forum-Avoiding Corn.

KerryGold Product Description: "It's 7 oz. It's in waxed paper. On the front sticker it says "100% Natural/Kerrygold/Aged Cheddar Cheese/Rich Creamy Cheddar/7oz (198g)/Imported from Ireland" and there's a picture of cows eating grass inside a stone-walled pasture. On the back sticker is the nutrition facts and it says "Packed for: Irish Dairy Board Inc./Wilmette IL 60091/Product of Ireland/www.kerrygold.com"

While this description is just for the one type of KerryGold cheese, all their cheeses should be in similar packaging, or it has probably been repackaged in the USA and may have cross-contamination.

Another review of KerryGold cheese can be found here: KerryGold Dublinear & Mild Cheddar

KerryGold also makes a butter, which is probably also corn-free but hasn't been definitively tested yet to my knowledge.

Boar's Head Meats & Cheeses

In November 2006, Boar's Head confirmed that two of their deli lunch meats are corn-free.

Boar's Head Low Sodium Turkey
Boar's Head Deluxe Low Sodium Roast Beef

Since there is a lot of cross-contamination at the deli counter, these meats may not be corn-free when you get them. Do be careful.

Also back in Septemer 2006, Boar's Head confirmed that their White American Deli Cheese was corn-free as well. (Same cross-contamination risks at the Deli pertain to this as well)

If you have any other information on the corn-free status of these products or reactions to report, please let us know.
