Moderates Food List (personal experience may vary)

 Moderates Food List updated 10/2023

This is a compilation of some of the safer items for moderates, and as such, you

may find items that you tolerate that aren’t featured on this list. This is intended

to be a jumping off point for people that are struggling to find any safes to

eat/use. Remember to trial all items suggested carefully. Just because other

moderate people pass these does not mean you will!

Remember “brands” matter! It comes down to processing aids and practices.

These companies or individuals can change their practices at any time but

historically have been the most corn safe. These still need to be checked against

other allergens.

Bellaphoria - GLOW Mineral Hi-Lites Review

For those that can do Bellaphoria's powder products, you're going to want to hunt down their Hi-Lites product.

I was told it is not being sold online but only at certain distributors or something or other.  Basically, you Canadians are lucky ducks.

But I did convince them to send me one.

I really thought I'd hate it, but I wanted to try it.  And honestly being UNABLE to order it was driving me into a frenzy.

It's a very light sparkling powder with a shimmer effect is AMAZEBALLS for a night out.

Just that extra ... Something.. to complete your look.

Things you should note though... you have to put it on last. If you put anything over it.. at all.. it will disappear.

A little too orange for my complete satisfaction (Bellaphoria if you're listening, I'd like it a bit more pinkish) but it's very light and just a little works. So you really don't see the orange once it's applied appropriately.  I use their Pink Blossom blush for reference which has no orangey color, most of their other blushes do have an orangey-ness to them so if you use one of those you likely will not notice this issue at all and think I'm nutballs. Which I kinda am, but that's another matter.

Oh, and Bellaphoria if you're listening... I'm also looking for a super shimmery bone color.. Like a shimmery eye shadow the color of your Platinum foundation or a little whiter.

Enjoy!

Cross-Contamination issues - Grains and Corn

The attached photo was taken of a Mini-Pops brand popping sorghum bag. For those that know how grain is processed, stored, shipped, or even how fields work.. this isn't a shocking thing.

But it is something to be aware of.

All grains are often grown in fields where other grains have grown (causing plants to grow from seeds of the last year among what was planted) and if the grower isn't super OCD about removing stray plants from these fields, the seeds of stray plants can make into the harvest.  These harvested seeds are often shipped in the same trucks and stored in the same silos that other seeds used to be in, or even so close to other seeds as to pick up a stray seed from another plant.

Most places that use grains have a quality control group that sorts through the seeds - even if it's a robot or sieve - and removes those that aren't the right seed. But as you can see, it's not always 100% effective.

This cross-contamination may also help explain why many of the super sensitive corn allergic persons must avoid all grains, though there are other reasons why that may be the case.

For most people, the trace amounts that escape the sorting/quality control process for flours and whatnot are not usually a big deal as we're talking about a very very small amount that is usually divided among a large amount.  For example, one kernel of corn in 200 lbs of flour.

However, finding one kernel in a bag like this is scary to the corn allergic. So please, if you buy whole grains of any kind, please please make sure to sort through before preparing/cooking and we also generally advise rinsing before use to remove any grain powder on the outside. Rinsing grains for popping though will probably interfere with the popping process, so proceed with caution.

Rice Krispies & Corn Allergy

http://www.ricekrispies.com/
As much as we'd all love to sit and eat Rice Krispy Treats, Kellogg's Rice Krispies are not safe for corn allergies.

First, Rice Krispies are fortified. The fortification process adds corn. ALWAYS. So if you see a product that is fortified with vitamins, just put it back on the shelf.

Fortification contains corn for two reasons.
1. The vitamins are sometimes sourced from corn as it the case with almost all Vitamin C products on the market. They are produced via fermentation of corn.
2. Corn and corn derivatives are used to stabilize the vitamins so that they are viable when added to the product, and so they are shelf-stable.. so that when you eat the product the vitamins are still viable.

I have circled/boxed in the main corny ingredients in these products. BHT is almost always derived from corn. And then there's the aforementioned vitamins.

Also in the original Rice Krispies there is malt flavor. There are two things this could be and both are so often from corn that I'd be surprised if it wasn't.
1. Malt Flavor can be from actual malted products, which is usually a mix of corn and barley. That it's not included in the gluten-free one, means there's likely some barley in it.
2. "Flavor" in most products - even natural flavor - is made in a lab somewhere from chemicals, which are usually corny.

All this to say, yes... Rice Krispies are not safe for corn allergies.

Rice Chex & Corn Allergy

http://www.chex.com
It turns out there are quite a few foods that aren't posted about on here because none of our group eats them nor have they tried to eat them in many many years because of the obvious corn. But some of the newer to corn allergies crowd are attempting to eat them. So we'll be making a few posts here in the next few days so that these products show up in our page search.

As much as we'd all love to grab a box off the shelf and start eating, General Mills Rice Chex is not safe for corn allergies.

First, Rice Chex is fortified.

I have circled/boxed in the main corny ingredients in this product. Vitamin E is almost always corntaminated, but can be from corn or soy. BHT is almost always derived from corn. And then there's the aforementioned vitamins.

Now let me talk for a minute about the things not boxed in red. Lets ignore that rice can be corntaminated and that the cereal itself could easily be made on the same lines as their Corn Chex (which is also gluten-free).  The sugar is likely safe, and the salt is likely safe-ish.

Molasses on the other hand is easy to have corn added to it. There are very few molasses products on the market that are safe for corn allergies, so if you see molasses on a product you should use caution.

Anyway, I hope this helps some of our newer group members and those new to corn allergies to better avoid some of the pitfalls.

Quaker Oats

A recent inquiry by one of our Facebook group members into Quaker Oats, received this response:

"Thanks for letting us know that you're allergic to corn. We appreciate your interest in buying Quaker Old Fashioned Oats directly from us.
I'd like you to know that our oats could have been grown, harvested, stored, and/or transported with corn; therefore, we cannot guarantee that our oats didn't have incidental exposure to this ingredient.
I wish we could be more helpful. Thanks for considering our brand of oats.
Quaker Consumer Relations"

Since most customer responses we get are ambiguous or "there's no corn in it" when there is, we're super-stoked about the honesty of this response, and would totally buy them if we could.

Quaker Oats have had many reports of allergic reactions among our corn groups and so we do not deem them safe for corn allergies.

Corn-Free Foods & Products List - July 2014

Corn-Free Foods & Products List – Current only at the time of posting.
This is not a guarantee of corn-free, but foods that I in conjunction with others have investigated and tested. Since we all have different sensitivities, use this more as a guide and less as a bible. Some of these foods I haven’t tried and have relied on other’s experiences, as some of these products are either not available in my area or I must avoid them for other reasons.
Read labels every time you buy a product, and be cautious. If anyone has had problems with anything listed here, please do let us know.
Some items on the list have reported corn in them (mostly medications). These have been left on the list, with the source of corn noted on the side.  These are left on the list as they may be needed in an emergency, and an educated decision is best at these times.
Legend:
MC – Company/Manufacturer confirms or claims product to be corn-free.
MC 10/06 – Date last confirmed with company.
? – Items thought to be corn-free. Successfully eaten by at least one person, but more   confirmation is needed.
Untested – Thought to be corn-free, but no one has tested it to my knowledge.
Reported Reactions – Reactions have been reported, but may or may not be corn related. Use with caution.
