Miss Roben's Products - removed

We're sad to see it go, but Allergygrocer.com has gone out of business. Thus the removal of these products from the list.  These products may be returned to the list in future though..

Since these products/brand is now owned by an unknown quanity/company, these products will need to be re-evaluated for their safety.

Amy's Kitchen products - Removed

We've removed all Amy's products from our corn-free list. They needed to be re-evaluated anyway, but this posting on our Facebook page in response to an inquiry about corn in their products pushed my hand to remove all their products.

"If Amy's Kitchen adds corn to a product or buys an ingredient that lists corn as a component, it will be shown on our ingredient statement. We are aware that very small amounts of corn based ingredients are sometimes used in the manufacture of ingredients. In many of these instances, the FDA does not require that the corn component be labeled therefore we are not made aware of the corn use from our suppliers. If some corn ingredient was used somewhere in the processing of an ingredient and it was not labeled, it is because the use level is very low (considered incidental) and could have been removed during the manufacture of the ingredient. In these instances, we do not believe there is a dangerous level of protein or DNA from the corn as used in our product"

In other words, an ingredient can be processed using corn and Amy's will still label it "corn-free" because they can (legally it is allowed, even if it may not be safe for corn allergies). Amy's corn-free claims are not be trusted at this point, so use extreme caution with any of their products.

(Products may be allowed back onto the list, but only if they pass human-testing first.)

Annie's Mac & Cheese - not entirely corn-free.

Most Annie's products have been consistently proven to be problematic for those with sensitive corn allergies, and we've had several posts about their seemingly safe looking products being removed from our lists.

Their Mac & Cheese was officially removed a while ago, though it doesn't seem like we made a post about it.  The Mac & Cheese looks good on the label but did not pass our human testing sufficiently.

The annatto coloring agent is suspected but also those products without annatto have caused reactions. The cause of the reactions is unknown at this point but thought to be part of the cheese flavoring packet.

Those less sensitive may find they do well with the product now and then, but it is not recommended for those really sensitive to corn.

Our articles on other Annie's products:
Annie's Organic Ketchup - removed
Annie's Naturals - Salad Dressings
Annie's Homegrown bunnies - removed

There are a couple Annie's products still on the  list. Their plain pastas and their mustard. Please use extreme caution with any of their other products.

BlueBonnet Vitamins & Suppliments

Inquiries into the Bluebonnet company and products as posted on Delphi Forums - Avoiding Corn, has made this company one of our favorites. Keep in mind that not all of their products are corn-free, but their willingness to give out accurate information for people with food allergies has us pretty impressed.

Capsules - made from pine/spruce
Vegetable Cellulose - made from pine/spruce
L-Glutamine - cassava
Calcium Magnesium - corn-free (check labels to make certain you have the right one)

Do be aware though at any of their products containing fructose, Vitamin C, powdered Vitamin D3, or vegetarian glucosamine will not be safe for a corn allergy. These ingredients are confirmed sourced from corn.

The BlueBonnet Calcium Magnesium 1:1 Ratio (pictured here) contains traces of rice. FYI.

Also, their multivitamins are not corn-free. "that all their vitamin C is derived from corn, the vitamin D3 from lanolin contains corn starch in the drying method from an oil to a powder, both of these ingredients are in all their multivitamins."

It's so good to deal with a company who gives you the straight forward truth about what is or isn't in their products. Even though many of their products may not be corn-free, it's nice to know they're honest and we can trust the replies we're given. Kudos BlueBonnet!

Organic Prairie Ground Turkey

A company response posted on our favorite forum - Delphi Forums - Avoiding Corn - states this product to be corn-free.

Organic Prairie's Ground Turkey Chub has no added ingredients to the ground turkey, and the packaging does not contain corn starch as well.

This product still needs testers, so let us know how you are doing with it.

Bellaphoria & Signature Minerals - Cosmetics Review

When going corn-free as a woman, one of the biggest hurdles is our personal look or style. Nothing really has more affect than being denied our facepaint.

Over the last few years, more and more new companies are starting to make good corn-free cosmetics thus making it easier for women with a corn allergy to move to corn-free cosmetics and still feel in "fashion".  Unfortunately most of these products are only sold online, so I thought a review of the products might help you make a decision on which is the best product for you.

I'll be covering two companies in this post.  Bellaphoria & Signature Minerals.

Both companies make pure mineral cosmetics. I managed to finagle some samples of both company's products… Signature Minerals will send you some samples for a small shipping fee. Bellaphoria no longer does samples, I just was lucky they had a few left from a trade show (I think that's what they said).  It is also lucky for them that they gave me the samples. I'm a hands-on type of customer especially with beauty products, so I like to know what I'm getting when I'm buying. Without their sample, I would not have given them a second look and would just have gone with Signature Minerals. (Yes, I am that kinda shopper.)

So you know, I'm a pale-skinned (unless I tan) white girl with dark hair and dark brown eyes. I'll try to be as accurate in my descriptions as possible, but I thought I'd let you know my "base" palette I was working with.

My former cosmetics are Zuzu Luxe - Gabriel sold at Health Food Stores and Whole Foods, which many now contain corn, thus my search for a new makeup. I may make color comparisons for those of you who have Zuzu Luxe sold near you if you wanted to "see" what these two companies colors might be close to.

Also keep in mind, if you're moving from mainstream cosmetics to these mineral makeups you'll have quite a transition period. These mineral makeups do not require as much makeup to make an impact. Start out using 1/3 of what you'd think you'll need on your brush, as these colors can be very intense.

Foundation:
Signature Minerals (SM): 0 Porcelain  ($14.95)
Bellaphoria: Platinum, Light, Medium ($24.95 each)

Coverage or application of both of these were good. Unfortunately the only shade I had from SM was way too light for my skin so I wasn't able to accurately judge how well it works as a foundation. Bellaphoria won me over with theirs though, as their light foundation matches my skin perfectly, and went on like a breeze.

SM's 0 is nearly exactly the same color as my Gabriel "Bone" eyeshadow. It's an off-white color, and pretty much looks like white eyeshadow on my skin. Bellaphoria's Platinum is essentially the same color, but has just a touch more beige/pink to it. If you're really really white, one of these shades may work for you.

Bellaphoria's Light foundation, I'd describe it as a Neutral Light Beige or Creamy Natural. It is almost exactly the same color as my Zuzu Luxe Dual Powder foundation in D-7 (which now contains corn derivatives). The Bellaphoria has just a touch more pink to it than the Zuzu Luxe, but that didn't show when I applied it.

Bellaphoria's Medium is a little darker, and would work perfectly for me if I had a good tan. It's still "light" though, and should work for those with medium complexions.

Blush:
Signature Minerals: Gleeful  (10g size: $6.95)
Bellaphoria: (Mineral blushes) Citrus Glow, Pink Coral, Rustic Rose, Antique Rose, Luxberry, Mauviene  (10g sizes: $16.95 each)

I have to say I wasn't a big fan of any of Bellaphoria's blush colors, though I am wearing Rustic Rose today. It's possible I was just applying them wrong.  I did however like SM's Gleeful, and if you like shimmer in your blush you may want to look into using SM's Bordeaux eye shadow very lightly as a blush.

SM's Gleeful - This is a very nice med-dark mauve blush (it looks nothing like their website picture). I like my blush to "show" for a relatively dramatic but remotely natural look so it was perfect for me.  SM's Gleeful comparison to Bellaphoria - if Rustic Rose and Luxberry had a child, it'd be SM's Gleeful.

Bellaphoria - (none of these except possibly Rustic Rose looked right on my skin, most looked surreal, but your mileage may vary. These are very strong/bright pigments.)

Citrus Glow - This is an orange based brown. On the website it looks a little bit like a creamy orange/beige or almost like a foundation color. It is not. Trust me. It actually reminds me a bit of a med-light terra-cotta clay.

Pink Coral - This is a very bright light baby pink. When I put it on, I thought it might look good on very light skinned blondes. I however tried it out as an eye shadow and liked it much better as it added just an extra spunk to my normal use of just lavender eye shadow.

Mauviene - This is a very bright pinkish/purple mauve. By itself, it looks rather pink, but compared to the Pink Coral, this is purple. I also preferred this one as an eye shadow.

Rustic Rose - This is pretty much spot on with it's name. It's a rose + rust color, and one that I may use when doing my face in a neutral brown palette. It looks a little odd when used on my cheeks with lavender or pink eye shadows. (If you use greens or blues as eye shadows this shade may work)

Luxberry - This is a purple mauve color and very dark. I just noticed that it looks similar to my Zuzu Luxe Haze blush but with just a touch more purple.  I also tried this out as an eyeshadow and liked it.

Antique Rose - Also well named, it looks like antiqued rose paint though maybe a little more brown based. It's a very earthy color of pink or rose.

Eyeshadows:
I did not have any Bellaphoria eyeshadows, but from my experiences with their other products, I am relatively certain their eye shows are highly pigmented probably more so than the Signature Minerals.

Signature Minerals: Eyeshadow $5-$8  (Bellaphoria eyeshadows $11.95)

Bordeaux - This is a very shimmery rose pink. It's bright and beautiful. I actually loved it as a blush, but it works great on the eyes too. It is not a shade for the faint of heart as a eye shadow though. (I really wish I had this shade as a lipstick too.)

Eggplant Dk - This is a dirty purple and looks exactly like it does on their website. I'm not sure why it's called Eggplant because it looks nothing like eggplant. It is almost brown/grey though it's clearly a purple. It's a little hard to describe, but it's not a real purple.

Terre Dark - This is a dark warm brown color. It looks almost like milk chocolate. This is a great basic color brown if you're wanting to do a look with neutral shades.

Black Liner - This is black. Just basic black black.

I played around with these nearly all day and didn't have any reaction. I will most likely be using a little of both of these companies, and will be trying out a couple different shades of Signature Minerals foundation to see if I can find one to suit me (the price of SM is much less for foundations).

NOW foods -Xanthan Gum

Xanthan Gum Powder 6 OuncesA company response from NOW foods posted on our Facebook group verifies that this xanthan gum isn't safe for corn allergies. Use caution.

While many companies do claim all the protein is removed during the processing this is not usually always true or at least many corn allergic persons do react to xanthan gum that is grown on corn. (Soy allergies may also want to avoid this product.)

Brown Cow Cream Top Yogurt - Plain

Brown Cow's Cream Top Yogurt (plain) is being removed from the corn-free list as it now contains pectin which may contain dextrose or other corny additives in it's production.

This may be added back to the list if it's proven again to be safe through human trials.

Until then use caution with all Brown Cow yogurt products.

Corn-Free & Gluten-free List - information

Our Corn-Free & Gluten-free List can be found in the following Google Document link. This is updated on and off and may be more current than this post shows as a new post is not made every time the list is updated. It was last updated last week, and will be periodically updated as needed.

Corn-Free and Gluten-Free List [LINK to Google Docs]

Note that I am now keeping track of products that have been removed either due to multiple corn reactions being reported or company ingredient change verifications by adding an x before the name of a product and using the strike out writing feature. I'll try to remember to put a note about why it's been removed.

Also, just a reminder that this list is intended only to be used as a guideline. There may be many more products out there that are corn free. If you know of some, let us know! When they are confirmed by trial and/or company confirmation they'll go on the list. Also, ingredients change quickly. Although the list is kept current to the best of my ability, I can't possibly keep up with potential ingredient or supplier changes. So always double check ingredients before using a product. If there is a product listed in error, or something has changed, let me know so I can update the list. Thanks!!!

(Please contact Violets for any problems or additions to this list. Thank you.)

Corn-Free Foods & Products List - Slightly Updated again

This edition of the List is now expired.  Please check the homepage side bar for the new more current listing. Thank you!

Corn-Free Foods & Products List –  This is not 100% current. I've done some updating and added a few things, removed a few things. This is still a work in progress as I'm trying to catch up the list from the 2007 version.

This is not a guarantee of corn-free, but foods that I in conjunction with others have investigated and tested. Since we all have different sensitivities, use this more as a guide and less as a bible. Some of these foods I haven’t tried and have relied on other’s experiences, as some of these products are either not available in my area or I must avoid them for other reasons.

Read labels every time you buy a product, and be cautious. If anyone has had problems with anything listed here, please do let us know. (Thanks to Violets for her work in helping to create this list.)

Some items on the list have reported corn in them (mostly medications). These have been left on the list, with the source of corn noted on the side.  These are left on the list as they may be needed in an emergency, and an educated decision is best at these times.

Organic Valley Deli Cheeses

Just in.. Organic Valley Deli cheeses are now packed using tapioca/sago starch instead of corn starch. This was reported by company correspondence posted on Delphi Forums - Avoiding Corn.

Per Organic Valley: "We have completely converted to the the tapioca/sago starch dusting."

Do be careful though as there may still be a few corn starched packages left out there, and these may not fully hit the shelves for several months.

You'll also need to make sure to keep reading the labels for any other corny additives. This is just a packaging update.

Also - None of the Stringles or Sticks use corn starch. :)

2012 Update: Block cheeses are not safe.

"their 8oz package is dusted in corn starch and their is a possibility of peanut cross contamination as it is packaged in a facility that processes peanuts! ...  the larger 16oz blocks and was told there is a risk with them as well due to the facility using corn starch on the outsides of the packaging"

Are you spending more and more of your time on Facebook? Catching up with friends and family, and want to keep up on your corn-free updates and forums as well?

Here's some resources:

Our own Facebook page: Corn-Free Foods & Products List on Facebook is a great way to stay on top of updates. Just click "LIKE", you know you want to. :)

Corn Allergy & Intolerance - Support Group on Facebook Groups is a great group that's been there a while, but is now one of Facebook's newly upgraded groups. It's a great way to meet others also trying to live their lives without corn.

As always we still recommend that you try to stay in touch with the Delphi forums group as much as possible, as it's the best resource for corn-free living.

Cripple Creek Barbeque

We've a new product to add to our list. Cripple Creek Barbeque sauces and spice rub.

We carefully interviewed and put owner John through the corn-free paces, and found his products to be corn-free.

Amazing!

John is a big believer in making good quality foods, and his willingness to make a corn-free bbq sauce has won us over. (He used to use corny vinegar, but has switched to a corn-free one. How awesome is that?)

You can find more information about the discussion of this product and ingredients: On Delphi's Avoiding Corn.

When ordering, please let John know you do have a corn allergy in the comments just to make sure you get one of the new batches with safe vinegar.  Enjoy!
